Jill's Market: Bell peppers
Print article - Return to article list

Bell peppers are a favorite of ours, and are also known as sweet peppers. They are bell-shaped, crunchy, and beautiful and bright in color. They are a part of the chili pepper family, but are not spicy. This veggie is native to Mexico, but is an important commercial crop all over the world. They come in bright colors such as orange, red, purple and yellow. Bell peppers can help promote health with nutrients and are also low in calories and fats. Bell peppers have Vitamin A and C, along with potassium, iron, zinc and magnesium. These combinations can help resist against infection and facilitate metabolism.

Fresh bell peppers are sold in grocery stores year-round and are best when fresh, firm and bright in color. They are great raw or with dip, in salad or stir-fry. They can be stuffed, grilled or served on pizzas.

Some of our favorite pepper recipes are:

Stuffed peppers

Pepper pizza

Texas caviar

Fajitas

Homemade salsa

Step by step: Turkey Tortilla Soup
